What was your New Year's resolution? Like most people it may have been along the line of lose weight, get in shape, maybe even run a marathon?

If you are a healthcare traveler, fitness may be difficult to incorporate in your routine. Twelve hour shifts, working graveyard, buy betaine anhydrous working overtime makes living life difficult yet alone adding working out.

As a traveler you have opportunities to explore the world and experience things you would otherwise never dreamed of. But what about taking a hobby and turning it into your reason for traveling.

I have met nurses that do exactly that. They pick travel assignments to coincide with big marathons and triathlons. Whether it's making sure you are in a city to hit the event, or picking an ideal location for training they are doing it.

You do not have to love running to get started or stay motivated. Regardless of how limited you believe your time is, do something for yourself. Start walking, jogging or even cycling. Get involved in team activities, many facilities have co-ed sport teams. Lace up for a charity. Start small, almost every city has local 5K races. It is a great way to see the city, meet people, and inspire yourself.

Whether you start an exercise regiment or a marathon runner, I promise you will feel better. It will improve your overall health, give you more energy, put you in a better mood, and help you lose weight. It's a win win situation for you and your patients.
